Materials List

Bernat® Softee® Chunky (100 g/3.5 oz; 99 m/108 yds)

-Main Color (MC) (28041 Clay) 8 balls

-Contrast A (28203 Teal) 4 balls
Size 10 mm (U.S. N15) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge

Instructions for BLANKET:

With MC, ch 56.

1st row: (RS). Sl st in 2nd ch from hook. Sl st in each of next 4 ch. *1 hdc in each of next 5 ch. Sl st in each of next 5 ch. Rep from * 4 times more. Turn.
2nd row: Working in back loops only, sl st in each of next 5 sl st. *1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. Sl st in each of next 5 sl st. Rep from * 4 times more. Turn.
3rd row: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc). Working in back loops only, 1 hdc in each of next 5 sl st. *Sl st in each of next 5 hdc. 1 hdc in each of next 5 sl st. Rep from * 4 times more. Turn.
4th row: Ch 2 (does not count as hdc). Working in back loops only, 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. *Sl st in each of next 5 st st. 1 hdc in each of next 5 hdc. Rep from * 4 times more. Turn.
5th row: Working in back loops only, sl st in each of next 5 hdc. *1 hdc in each of next 5 sl st. Sl st in each of next 5 hdc. Rep from * 4 times more. Turn. Rep last 4 rows until work from beg measures 50" [127 cm], ending with a 2nd or 4th row. Fasten off.

Instructions for EDGING:

With RS facing, join A with sl st at top right corner of Blanket.

1st rnd: Ch 1. (1 sc. Ch 1. 1 sc) in same sp as last sl st (corner). Work 73 sc evenly across top edge. (1 sc. Ch 1. 1 sc) in next st (corner). Work 73 sc evenly down side. (1 sc. Ch 1. 1 sc) in next st (corner). Work 53 sc evenly across bottom edge. (1 sc. Ch 1. 1 sc) in next st (corner). Work 73 sc evenly up side. Join with sl st to first sc.
2nd rnd: Sl st in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. (1 sc. Ch 1. 1 sc) in same sp as last sl st. Ch 1. Miss next sc. *1 sc in next sc. Ch 1. Miss next sc.* Rep from * to * across to next corner ch-1 sp. **(1 sc . Ch 1. 1 sc) in next ch-1 sp. Ch 1. Rep from * to * across to next corner ch-1 sp. Rep from ** twice more. Join with sl st to first sc.

This looks like a simple blanket to make. You even have a tutorial to boot which makes it easier. It is getting colder so blankets are always needed. I also knit for charity and blankets are in big demand. I like the detail to the blanket. It is certainly not boring. Thank you for the pattern.

What a interesting design this "Make It Quick Afghan" makes. I have never made anything using Super Chunky yarn before so I want to make this one! There is a blanket yarn out there, I wonder how this will look using that? Has anyone used it for this pattern? If yes how did it turn out? Please let me know. Also, I think this will work with normal yarn too, but will use more yarn. After reading the written pattern above I think this will work out nicely. Thank you for sharing this free crochet pattern.

Does the pattern come out the same if doing it left-handed? Or is there a pattern somewhere for a left-handed?

No, just follow it as written. Some rows just start with a slip stitch.

i started this afghan and i am having issues getting the width right. i did a test gage using the same yarn and hook suggested, and that came out fine, but my main color width seems to short (subtracted 8" for edging from final width) i can't seem to get it to be more than 30" across. my stitches seem pretty loose, so i don't think they are too tight. any suggestions?

This pattern is a multiple of 5 1. If you want to end on slip stitches on either side than you don't want a multiple of 10. For example, you would want 55 1 or 65 1, etc. If you use a multiple of 10 1 (60 1, 70 1, etc.) you will have slip stitches on one edge and half double crochet on the other edge making your pattern off center.

I'm certain there's a typo, although I went to Bernat's website and the same typo is on their original pattern. It only makes sense to sc 53 across the top and bottom edges and sc 73 down each side.

I found myself having the same problem when transcribing the pattern from tablet to paper. I was so glad to discover it BEFORE I began it, rather than after. You are right about the count. 53 too and bottom edges, 73 on each side.
