SPECIAL TERMS
BPsc: Back-post single crochet—Insert hook from back to front and then to back again around post of stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.
BPhdc: Back-post half double crochet—Yarn over, insert hook from back to front and then to back again around post of stitch, yarn over and draw up loop, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

Square 2 (make 12) – Work Rounds 1–3 with B, Rounds 4–7 with C, Rounds 8 and 9 with D, Rounds 10 and 11 with A.

SQUARE (make 48 – 12 in each color sequence)
With first color and larger hook, ch 4; join with sl st in first ch to form a ring.
Round 1 (RS): Ch 2 (counts as first dc here and throughout), 11 dc in ring; join with sl st in top of beginning ch—12 dc, turn.
Round 2: Ch 2, FPdc around same st as join, *dc in next dc, FPdc around same dc; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch, turn—24 dc.

Round 4 (WS): With WS facing, join 2nd color with sl st in any ch-1 sp, ch 2, BPdc around next dc, ch 1, *sk next dc, dc in next ch-1 sp, BPdc around next dc, ch 1; repeat from * around; join with sl st in top of beginning ch, turn.
Round 5: Ch 1, sc in same st as join, ch 4, sk next ch-1 sp, *sc in next 2 dc, ch 4, sk next ch-1 sp; repeat from * around to last dc, sc in last dc; join with sl st in first sc, turn—12 ch-4 sp.
Round 6: Sl st into first ch-4 sp, ch 2, (dc, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook—picot made, dc, hdc) in same ch-4 sp, *(hdc, dc, ch 2, sc in 2nd ch from hook—picot made, dc, hdc) in each remaining ch-4 sp around; join with sl st in first sl st, turn—12 picots.

Round 11: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), FPdc around next st, [hdc in next 2 sts, FPdc around next st] 4 times, *hdc in next 2 sts, sk next ch-1 sp, (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in next st (corner made), sk next ch-1 sp, hdc in next st, FPdc around next st, **[hdc in next 2 sts, FPdc around next st] 8 times; repeat from * around, end at **; [hdc in next 2 sts, FPdc around next st] 3 times, hdc in last st; join with sl st in first hdc.
Fasten off 4th color.

FINISHING
Arrange squares as shown in Assembly Diagram. Hold neighboring squares with RS together, with larger hook and A, working through both thicknesses and inserting hook in outer loops only, sl st down the columns (vertically, joining eight squares to neighboring eight squares) to join squares. When all columns have been joined, use larger hook and D to join across the rows in same manner. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Edging
With WS facing and smaller hook, join B with sl st in any outer corner ch-1 sp.
Round 1: Ch 2 (counts as first hdc), hdc in same ch-1 sp as join, {*hdc in next 4 sts, [BPdc around next st, hdc in next 2 sts] 9 times, hdc in next st, ** hdc2tog in next 2 inner corner ch-1 sps; repeat from * across to next outer corner ch-1 sp, end at **, (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in next outer corner ch-1 sp} 3 times; repeat from * to ** once more, 2 hdc in first ch-1 sp, ch 1; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.
Round 2: With RS facing join C with sl st same st as join, ch 2 (counts as first hdc), (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in first ch-1 sp, [*hdc in next 5 sts, [FPdc around next st, hdc in next 2 sts] 9 times, **hdc in next 6 sts; repeat from * across to next outer corner ch-1 sp, end at **; (2 hdc, ch 1, 2 hdc) in next outer corner ch-1 sp] 3 times; repeat from * to ** once more, hdc in next 5 sts; join with sl st in top of beginning ch. Fasten off.
Using yarn needle, weave in all ends.
