Super Cool Hexagon Throw

If you're looking for a crochet blanket pattern that thinks outside the box, then the Super Cool Hexagon Throw is what you should crochet next. This unexpected crochet afghan will create a unique statement piece for you home. Once you've created your striped hexagon center, you'll add a few triangle points along the edge. Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook

Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)

Materials:

  • RED HEART® Super Saver®: 1 skein each 312 Black A, 320 Cornmeal B, 656 Real Teal C, 505 Aruba Sea D, 313 Aran E, and 726 Coral F
  • Susan Bates® Crochet Hook: 5.5mm [US I-9]
  • Yarn needle

Measurements: 47” (119.5 cm) across widest point to point.

Gauge: 2 sts = 4” (10 cm); 6 rows = 3” (7.5 cm) in half double crochet. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge.


Special Stitches:

sc2tog = [Insert hook in next stitch, yarn over and pull up a loop] twice, yarn over and draw through all 3 loops on hook.

V-st (V-stitch) = (Hdc, ch 2, hdc) in indicated stitch or space.


Special Technique
Adjustable-ring method = Wrap yarn into a ring, ensuring that the tail falls behind the working yarn. Grip ring and tail firmly between middle finger and thumb. Insert hook through center of ring, yarn over (with working yarn) and draw up a loop. Work stitches of first round in the ring, working over both strands (the tail and the ring). After the first round of stitches is worked, pull gently, but firmly, on tail to tighten ring.

Join with sc = Place a slip knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch, yarn over and draw up a loop, yarn over and draw through both loops on hook.

 

Notes:

  1. Pentagon-shaped center is made in joined rounds with right side facing at all times.
  2. Two triangles are worked back and forth in rows on each edge.
  3. Edging is worked in turned rounds.
  4. Always join yarn with right side of throw facing.

Center
With A, make an adjustable ring.

Round 1 (right side): Ch 2 (counts as first hdc here and throughout), 14 hdc in ring; join with slip st to top of beginning ch—15 hdc. Pull gently, but firmly, on tail to tighten ring
Round 2: Ch 2, V-st in next st, *hdc in next 2 sts, V-st in next st; repeat from * 3 times, hdc in last st; join with slip st to top of beginning ch—10 hdc and 5 V-sts.
Round 3: Ch 2, hdc in next st, V-st in next ch-2 space, *hdc in next 4 sts, V-st in next ch-2 space; repeat from * 3 times, hdc in last 2 sts; join with slip st to top of beginning ch—4 hdc between each V-st. Fasten off.
Round 4: Join B with slip st in any hdc, ch 2, *hdc in each hdc to next ch-2 space, V-st in next ch-2 space; repeat from * 4 times, hdc in remaining sts; join with slip st to top of beginning ch—6 hdc between each V-st.
Rounds 5–10: Ch 2, *hdc in each hdc to next  ch-2 space, V-st in next ch-2 space; repeat from * 4 times, hdc in remaining sts; join with slip st to top of beginning ch—18 hdc between each V-st.Fasten off.
Rounds 11–16: With C, repeat Rounds 4–9—30 hdc between each V-st. Fasten off at end of Round 16.
Rounds 17–34: Repeat Rounds 11–16 three times and change color as in the following color sequence: Work 6 rounds with D, 6 rounds with E, and 6 rounds with F—66 hdc between each V-st.
Rounds 35 and 36: With A, repeat Rounds 4 and 5—70 hdc between each V-st.

Triangle #1
Join B with sc in 2nd st from any ch-2 space.

Row 1 (right side): Sc in next 33 sts; leave remaining sts unworked, turn—34 sc.
Rows 2–16: Ch 1, sc2tog, sc in each st to last 2 sts, sc2tog, turn—4 sc.
Row 17: Ch 1, [sc2tog] twice, turn—2 sc.
Row 18: Ch 1, sc2tog—1 sc. Fasten off.


Triangle #2
With right side of same side facing, skip first 2 unworked sts, join B with sc in next hdc.
Work same as Rows 1–18 of triangle #1.

Repeat triangles #1 and #2 on each remaining side of center.

Edging

Round 1 (right side): Join A with sc in end of first row of any triangle #1, [*sc in end of each row up first side of triangle, 3 sc in st in last row, sc in end of each row down 2nd side*, sc in next 2 skipped sts between triangles; repeat from * to * once over triangle #2, sc in next unworked st, 2 sc in next ch-2 space, sc in next unworked st] 5 times; join with slip st in first sc, turn—420 sc (84 sc across each side).
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each sc; join with slip st in first sc, turn.
Round 3: (Ch 1, slip st) in each sc; join with slip st in first ch. Fasten off.
