Instructions:

NOTES:
1. The gauge is VERY important to ensure the correct size for the blocks. Adjust hook size to achieve correct gauge.
2. The blanket is constructed from a number of blocks and strips. Refer frequently to the assembly diagrams for placement of blocks and strips.
3. To change color, work last stitch of old color to last yarn over; yarn over with new color and draw through all loops on hook. Fasten off old color.
4. Use I-9 (5.5 mm) hook for all blocks.

HINTS:
1. Mark the right side (RS) of each piece. You will always begin new colors on the right side.
2. You may wish to label each piece with the appropriate color sequence. Blocks are sewn to other blocks made in the same color sequence.

  1. BLOCK A
    (make 3 – 1 in each color sequence)

    Color Sequence #1: Work center block with A, strips 1 and 2 with C, strips 3 and 4 with B.
    Color Sequence #2: Work center block with C, strips 1 and 2 with D, strips 3 and 4 with A.
    Color Sequence #3: Work center block with D, strips 1 and 2 with B, strips 3 and 4 with C.


    Center Block
    With first color, chain 21.

    Row 1 (RS): Sc in second ch from hook and in each remaining ch across, turn—20 sc.
    Rows 2–10: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn; change to second color in last st of last row.
    Fasten off.


    Strip 1
    (work 2 – 1 each along long edges of center block)

    Rows 1 (RS)–14: With second color, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn—20 sc.
    Fasten off.

    Rotate piece to work along opposite side of foundation ch of center block.

    Row 1 (RS): Join second color with sc in first ch of foundation ch, sc in each ch across, turn—20 sc.
    Rows 2–14: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off.


    Strip 2
    (work 2 – 1 each along short edges of strips 1 and center block)

    Rotate piece to work in ends of rows along short edges of strips 1 and center block.

    Row 1 (RS): Join second color with sc in end of first row; work 29 more sc evenly spaced along edge, turn—30 sc.
    Rows 2–14: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off.

    Work another strip 2 along opposite short edges in same manner.


    Strip 3
    (work 2 – 1 each along short edges of strips 2 and long edge of a strip 1)

    Rotate piece to work in ends of rows of strips 2 and sts of a strip 1.

    Row 1 (RS): Join third color with sc in end of first row of one strip 2; work 39 more sc evenly spaced along edge, turn—40 sc.
    Rows 2–7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off.

    Work another strip 3 along opposite edge in same manner.


    Strip 4
    (work 2 – 1 each along short edges of strips 3 and long edge of a strip 2)

    Rotate piece to work in ends of rows along short edges of strips 3 and sts of a strip 2.

    Row 1 (RS): Join third color with sc in end of first row; work 39 more sc evenly spaced along edge, turn—40 sc.

    Center Block
    With first color, chain 31.

    Fasten off.


    Strip 1

    (work 2 – 1 each along long edges of center block)

    Rows 1 (RS)–7: With second color, ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn—30 sc.
    Fasten off.

    Rotate piece to work along opposite side of foundation ch of center block.

    Row 1 (RS): Join second color with sc in first ch of foundation ch, sc in each ch across, turn—30 sc.
    Rows 2–7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off leaving a long tail for sewing.

    With matching yarn, sew sts of last row of each block F to last row of the block E made in the same color sequence (see assembly diagram). Sew through back loops only.


    BLOCK E/F EDGING
    (work along long edges of each combined block E/F)

    Color Sequence #1: D.
    Color Sequence #2: A.
    Color Sequence #3: C.


    Strip 1

    Row 1 (RS): Join yarn with sc in end of first row of long edge of combined block E/F; work 71 more sc evenly spaced along edge, turn—72 sc.
    Rows 2–7: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off.

    Work another strip 1 along opposite edge in same manner.


    FINISHING
    Arrange blocks with RS facing, as shown in assembly diagram. Sew blocks together using matching yarn and working through back loops only.


    Border
    Use I-9 (5.5 mm) hook for border.

    Strip 1
    (work 2 – 1 each along long edges of blanket)

    Row 1 (RS): Join D with sc in end of first row of long edge of blanket; work 157 more sc evenly spaced along edge, turn—158 sc.
    Rows 2–9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off.

    Work another strip 1 along opposite edge in same manner.


    Strip 2
    (work 2 – 1 each along short edges of strips 1 and blanket)

    Rotate piece to work in ends of rows along short edges of strips 1 and blanket.

    Row 1 (RS): Join D with sc in end of first row; work 137 more sc evenly spaced along edge, turn—138 sc.
    Rows 2–9: Ch 1, sc in each sc across, turn.
    Fasten off.

    Work another strip 2 along opposite short edges in same manner.


    Trim
    Use H-8 (5 mm) hook for trim.

    Round 1 (RS): Join B with sc in any st of edge of blanket, work sc evenly spaced around blanket, working 3 sc in each corner; join with slip st in first sc.
    Round 2: Ch 1, working in front loops only, work rev sc in each sc around; join with slip st in beginning ch.
    Round 3: Ch 1, working in unworked back loops of Round 1 sts, sc in each sc around; join with slip st in first sc.
    Fasten off.

    Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. To block, lay blanket flat, spray with water and let dry.
