Christmas Tree Throw and Pillow
Get ready for the most wonderful time of the year with this Christmas Tree Throw and Pillow! Roasting chestnuts by the open fire won't be complete without this Christmas crochet pattern. The thick, cabled look is perfect for those winter days when you can't seem to get warm. This tutorial also includes a matching crochet pillow, so you can have a whole lounge set for the holiday season. If you're in need of gift ideas, you could even work this up as a homemade Christmas gift!
Crochet HookI/9 or 5.5 mm hook, J/10 or 6 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Materials:
- RED HEART® Soft®: 16 balls 9621 True Green (Note: 13 balls are needed to make Throw only. 3 balls are needed to make Pillow only)
- Crochet hooks: 6mm [US J-10] and 5.5mm [US I-9]
- Yarn needle
- Stitch marker (for hook change at center section)
- 12 x 16” (30.5 x 40.5 cm) pillow form
Size: Throw measures 44 x 60” (112 x 152.5 cm), Pillow measures 13 x 17” (33 x 43 cm)
Gauge: 14 sts = 4” (10 cm); 8 rows = 4” (10 cm) in pattern with larger hook. CHECK YOUR GAUGE. Use any size hook to obtain the gauge. Gauge is not critical for this project.
Special Stitches:
Bpdc (back post double crochet) = Yarn over, insert hook from back side of work to front and to back again around the post of indicated stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Fpdc (Front post double crochet) = Yarn over, insert hook from front side of work to back and to front again around post of indicated stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (3 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.
Bptr (Back post treble crochet) = [Yarn over] twice, insert hook from back side of work to front and to back again around post of the indicated stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 3 times.
Fptr (Front post treble crochet) = [Yarn over] twice, insert hook from front side of work to back and to front again around post of the indicated stitch; yarn over and pull up a loop (4 loops on hook), [yarn over and draw through 2 loops] 3 times.
2/2 Back Cross (2 over 2 Back Cross) = Skip next 2 stitches, Fptr around each of next 2 stitches, working behind the 2 stitches just made, Fptr around each of the 2 skipped stitches.
2/2 Front Cross (2 over 2 Front Cross) = Skip next 2 stitches, Fptr around each of next 2 stitches, working in front of 2 stitches just made, Fptr around each of the 2 skipped stitches.
Notes:
1. Throw is worked in one piece. Pillow is worked in three pieces: front and two back panels. Each row of Throw and front of Pillow is divided into three sections. The first and last sections are worked in a cable post stitch pattern using the larger hook. The center section is worked in a tree-pattern using double crochet, post stitches, and chain-spaces and the smaller hook. Markers are used to indicate where the center section begins and ends, and to remind you to change the hook at these locations.
2. F or Throw, even-numbered rows are right side rows. Except for ribbing rows, Fptr and Bptr (treble crochet post stitches) are worked on right side rows (even-numbered rows). Fpdc and Bpdc (double crochet post stitches) are worked on wrong side rows (odd-numbered rows).
3. F or Pillow, odd-numbered rows are right side rows.
4. The turning chain a t the beginning of each row counts as a stitch. This means that when beginning a row, you skip the first stitch of the previous row (because the turning chain has already “worked into” the first stitch), and the last stitch of each row is worked into or around the turning chain of the previous row.

With larger hook, ch 155.
Row 1 (wrong side): Dc in 3rd ch from hook (beginning ch counts as first st), dc in each remaining ch across, turn—154 sts.
Rows 2–7: Ch 2 (counts as first st here and throughout), *Fpdc around next st, Bpdc around next st; repeat from * to end of row, hdc in turning ch-space, turn.
Begin Cable Pattern on Sides

What a beautiful afghan and pillow set. I was really glad that an up close was provided to see the details of the tree in the design. This will take an effort but it will be well worth it if you have the ability to complete it before this coming Christmas holiday.

I call this type of pattern an heirloom pattern because of all the time that is need to complete it. I would not want anything less than for this to be a treasure for my family to enjoy for years to come. The lush green yarn is beautiful and will warm any home. Don't forget to make the matching pillow.

I saw this and thought of my friend. They moved into a new rustic style home. She has wood tones and green colors. This will make a lovely addition even without it being for Christmas.i think some added tassels would make it very special. I guess I better get started. I have another project started but I can work o. Two!
