This is a beautiful afghan but the skill rating should be changed to either intermediate or advanced. This afghan is NOT an "easy" afghan to make! My mother made this afghan years ago and it was very challenging for her, and she was an experienced crocheter!

This is a beautiful Tunisian crocheted Empire Afghan pattern! The pattern is very well written and reads well. The Tunisian crochet is one of my favorite stitches to do. I love the colors used in this afghan and the the design is great. I have this one on my to do list for this winter. Thank you for this free beautiful pattern.

Yes, it is Tunisian crochet with an afghan hook. If you don't know how to use this type of hook there are some GREAT videos out on YouTube.

Many of the older patterns are difficult to figure out. Once you have done a few you can sometimes work them out. Personally, I love seeing this old patterns and trying to figure them out.

I'd love to try making this, but I can't even figure out the materials required - much less the pattern. I'm not a novice but apparently not good enough for "easy". Is this done with an Afghan hook? Can't find the type/brand/size listed on the pattern. I assume there are 3 shades of grey and 5 pink. It would be helpfull if patterns listed the type of yarn as all brands are not available everywhere (i.e. "size 5 bulky" or "size 4 wst. wt.") Can anyone clarify?

This is done in Worsted Weight (4). Zephyr Germantown is Virgin Wool 4 ply and the weight is 80 yards per ounce. It says at the top of the instructions to use hook sizes 4 and 5. Reading the first line of the instructions reveals that it is Afghan stitch... so you'll need afghan needles/hooks. I figured this out googling the yarn and reading the instructions. If you are from Australia, like I am... you then need to translate it to metric. I guess if you want to do a project this big you need to put time into finding the info you need.
