INSTRUCTIONS
SPECIAL STITCHES
Standing-sc—With sl knot on hook, insert hook in indicated stitch or space, yo and draw up a loop, yo and draw through both loops on hook. Note: This is also known as "join with sc."
Standing-dc—With sl knot on hook, yo, insert hook into indicated stitch or space, yo and draw up a loop, [yo and draw through 2 loops on hook] twice.
SPECIAL TECHNIQUE
surface slip stitch: Hold a slip knot (not on hook) on WS of piece. Insert hook from RS to WS. Place slip knot on hook, draw loop to RS. *A small distance from last insertion, insert hook from RS to WS through piece, yarn over, draw loop to RS and through loop on hook (surface slip stitch made); repeat from * as needed.
HELPFUL
Weave in ends as each piece is completed, to save time at the end of the project. Weave in ends away from edges, so they will not interfere with sewing pieces together and final edging of project.
HEART APPLIQUÉ (make 4)
With B, ch 2.
Round 1: (6 sc, 2 hdc) in 2nd ch from hook; do not join, work in continuous rounds—8 sts.
Round 2: 2 hdc in next 6 sts, (hdc, dc) in next st, 2 dc in last st—16 sts.
Round 3: 2 dc in next 13 sts, dc in next st, 2 dc in next 2 sts—31 sts.
Note: Work now proceeds back and forth in rows across one side of the center spiral. Take care to only work the number of stitches indicated in each row. Leave any remaining stitches unworked.
Row 4: 2 dc in next st, (dc, hdc) in next st, hdc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next st, 2 sc in next st, sc in next 2 sts, 2 sc in next st, TURN—14 sts.
Row 5: Ch 1, [2 sc in next st, sc in next 3 sts] 3 times, sl st in next st, turn—15 sc.

Spiral: With RS facing and beginning at center of Round 1, with C, work a surface slip stitch spiral, working into the base of the rounds. Fasten off.
CORNER SQUARE (make 4)
Notes: Rounds 1–20 are worked in continuous rounds, to avoid a visible join. Use different color stitch markers for beginning of round marker and corner markers. Move markers up as each round is completed.
With A, ch 2.
Round 1 (RS): Working over beginning tail, 8 sc in 2nd ch from hook; do not join; pull tail to close center opening, work in continuous rounds—8 sc. Place marker for beginning of round. Move marker up as each round is completed.
Round 2: [Sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, place marker in center sc of 3-sc group just made for corner] 4 times—16 sc.

With matching yarn, sew one Heart Applique to center of each Corner Square. Arrange squares and rectangles as shown in photo, matching corners. With C, whipstitch squares and rectangles together.
Edging
Note: Markers may be used to indicate corners, if desired. Place marker in center sc of 3-sc groups and move marker up to center sc of next 3-sc or 5-sc group, as each round is worked.
Round 1 (RS): With RS facing, join C with a standing-sc in any st of outer edge, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner; join with sl st in first sc.
Round 2: Ch 1, sc in each st around, working 3 sc in each corner sc; join with sl st in first sc. Fasten off.
Rounds 3 and 4: With B, repeat Rounds 1 and 2. Fasten off.
Round 5: With RS facing, join A with a standing-dc in any sc of outer edge, dc in each st around, working 5 dc in each corner; join with sl st in first dc. Fasten off.
Rounds 6 and 7: With B, repeat Rounds 1 and 2. Fasten off.

Using yarn needle, weave in all ends. Block lightly, if desired.

OMG I love this bold and beautiful pattern! Love the different appliques too. Was a little nervous when I saw all the instructions, but actually once you get going, they become intuitive. Might add a few more hearts though ;)

Whew! Look at all of the directions for this pattern and no directional pictures. The colors are very vibrant and will catch the beholders eye. I like it but I know if I like it, the teen in my life will not. Funny how that works, right?
