Autumn's Calling Crochet Afghan
Imagine for a minute that moment in the height of the fall season when the last of the trees have changed their colors, creating a wall of glorious colors glowing from their branches. The Autumn's Calling Crochet Afghan uses a unique granny square motif in an array of your favorite fall colors. Crochet HookH/8 or 5 mm hook
Yarn Weight(4) Medium Weight/Worsted Weight and Aran (16-20 stitches to 4 inches)
Materials:
- Patons ® Canadiana™ (3.5 oz/100 g; 205 yds/187 m): Contrast A Crantini (10522) 2 balls, Contrast B Burnt Orange (10630) 2 balls, Contrast C Burgundy (10430) 3 balls, Contrast D Dark Tea Green (10237) 2 balls, Contrast E Fool’s Gold (10610) 3 balls, Contrast F Toasty Grey (10012) 2 balls
- Size U.S. H/8 (5 mm) crochet hook or size needed to obtain gauge.
Gauge: 13 sc and 14 rows = 4" [10 cm]. 1 Motif = Approx 5½" [14 cm].
Measurement: Approx 45" x 55" [114.5 x 139.5 cm].
Instructions:
Motif I: Make 44 Motifs using A as Color 1, B as Color 2 and C as Color 3.
Motif II: Make 46 Motifs using F as Color 1, D as Color 2 and E as Color 3.
Join Motifs as you work, following diagram (see page 2).
Basic Motif
With Color 1, ch 7. Join with sl st to form a ring.
1st rnd: Ch 3 (counts as dc). [5 dc. Ch 3. (6 dc. Ch 3) 3 times] in ring. Join with sl st to top of ch 3.
2nd rnd: Ch 3. (Yoh. Draw up a loop in next dc. Yoh and draw through 2 loops on hook) 5 times. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook – beg cluster made. *Ch 5. Sl st in 2nd ch of ch 3. Ch 5. (Yoh. Draw up a loop in next dc. Yoh and draw through 2 loops on
hook) 6 times. Yoh and draw through all loops on hook – cluster made. Rep from * twice more. Ch 5. Sl st in top of ch 3. Fasten off.
3rd rnd: Join Color 2 with sl st to top of first cluster. *Working over sts of 2nd rnd, (3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc. Ch 2. 3 dc.Ch 1. 3 dc) in ch-3 sp of 1st rnd. Sl st in top of next cluster. Rep from * 3 times more, ending with join Color 3 with sl st to top of first cluster. Break Color 2.
4th rnd: With Color 3, ch 3 (counts as dc). 5 dc in same sp as last sl st. *Skip next (3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc). (6 dc. Ch 2. 6 dc) in next ch-2 sp. Skip next (3 dc. Ch 1. 3 dc).** 6 dc in next sl st. Rep from * twice more, then from * to ** once. Join with sl st to top of ch 3. Fasten off.

This pattern is an interesting twist on the traditional granny square and not any more difficult. It's a great pattern to use up scraps too. The above colours, pictured are gorgeous in autumn shades, but would also look wonderful in winter holiday colours, like red and green or different shades of blue.
